The writing section of the TOEFL test asks the test taker to write an essay on any one topic. These topics are either provided in the test paper or the test taker can select any topic according to his convenience and write an essay on it. Human beings are social animals. They always feel an inherent need to connect and expand their connections. There is a deep rooted need among all the human beings to share and express their feelings to their near and dear ones. But, due to geographical distances and economic concerns, connections between people got limited within the past few years. These distances have led to the emergence of various social networking sites. With the advent of Internet as well as the social networking sites and the cell phones a lot of social interaction is captured through email and instant messaging.

Social networking has become the rage of this modern age called as the 21st century. Social networks are those networks which are formed by the people for the people so that they can stay connected with their friends and family. These social networks are formed when people sharing certain interests such as likes, dislikes, hobbies, thoughts, ideas, religion, political views, etc., coalesce into groups or communities.

In modern times it refers more to online communities because this is the place where most social networks tend to exist. There are large number of websites that facilitate these social networking site. Some of the most well known social networking sites include Face book, Orkut, My Space, Twitter, Fropper and many more. Such sites help people to keep in touch with each other and also connect with long lost friends from school and college.

People of all generations have caught the fad now even though it began as a craze among the youth. You can send friend requests to become friends with the people you know or whom you want to know. If these people accept your requests then you can talk to them online and share your feelings and views with them. But, if they don't then you cannot force them to become your friends. Hence, it is said that the membership to such social sites can only be gained through existing members who will admit you into the circle as their friend. People can upload their photos as well as videos on these sites so that they can share them with their circle of friends and family.

The use of such sites is not restricted to this. Sometimes these sites can initiate action on some issue whether political or public. For instance, the public issue regarding the ban on "gutkha" was raised by some of the sites in order to know the views of the people all over the world.

Social networking plays a very important role when one is in search of a job. You can share your contacts wit your friends who are in need or search of a job so that they can grab some of the very good and trusted job opportunities. Numerous advertisers have found these social networking sites a very useful tool to get feedback on their products. This has led them to use such sites for the promotion of their products.

As there are advantages of such social networking sites, there are some disadvantages also. It is very much essential to be careful and vigilant while revealing any of the personal information about themselves or their family. They must take utmost care while uploading their photographs and videos so that they are not misused by the anti social agents of the society. Do not share anything with strangers. These can be used for sinister purposes and may lead to dangerous situations. There are many examples. In Mumbai, Adnan Patrawala, a wealthy youngster, was abducted and killed by some friends whom he met on Orkut.

The motive behind all this mishap was ransom. We can avoid such situations by taking precautionary measures for one's safety while using such sites.
