It is fair to say that politicians make decisions just to please the voters and usually forget the well-being of the nation as a whole.

When voting is involved in electing a politician means it a democracy. In a democracy a politician is a representative not just of the people, but also of their principles and opinions. In the pre-elections manifestos and speeches the contestants gain their popularity by convincing the voters that they share the same motives. When they hold the office, they project that they are working on the same motives that they had promised to keep the voters pleased in order to have a chance of being re-elected. Politician constantly feel the pressure of keeping the voters happy and many times policies are formulated with the same point of view. But not all of these policies prove to be in the best interest of the nation.

But then politicians too are human beings and can have an opinion different from the voting class. They are not merely puppets in the hands of the people who have elected them. In the field of governance they have more knowledge and experience. So if they come across a situation where they need to make a policy that is in the interest of the country as a whole they will do so. There have been many such instances where such a policy was made and they have faced public opposition. One case in point is with the separation of Church and State. While a majority of citizens initially did not want this separation to happen but were convinced later. “No law shall be made by the Congress with regard to an establishment of religion, or elimination the free exercise thereof no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States" is stated in the first amendment of the constitution. This shows that the politicians have shown strength and courage in such times and were able to explain to the citizens about the importance of the policies and were able to implement them.

But there exists a concern where the politicians and the general public are not on the same page. Many times the public wants a strong law to be made but the politicians keep on delaying it. Many countries have been waiting long for a strong Anti-graft bill, but despite great support from public, the politicians are not able to provide them with a good law. The voters too are aware of the wide spectrum of national interest, so they will oppose if they find a policy which is in conflict with the nation. But more important for them is interests of citizens. So if some steps are taken which are not pleasing the public, the policy makers should also take steps that will be of the interest of people. It is not possible that politicians will always be able to please their voter. But they should play a balancing act and make favorable decisions, along with those that are made from a national point of view, but the public is in disagreement. This balancing act will go a long way in serving the country and keeping the voters happy.
