Business Objects Interview Questions

Following are some of the finest questions on Business Objects reporting tool,to help you in getting ready for the job interview in the flourishing field of computers. The answers to these questions are to the point so as to help you in scoring better in your Business Objects job interviews.

Question 1: What do you mean by the term 'Business Objects'?

Answer: The integrated query, analysis and reporting solution developed for the use of business professionals is termed as Business Objects. It is an on-line analytical processing (OLAP) tool, with the help of which, business professionals are able to access the data stored in their corporate databases from their monitors and can use it as a part of DSS (Decision Support System). They can also present this analyzed data in the form of Business Objects documents.

Question 2: In how many ways can you implement aggregate awareness? Name and explain them.

Answer: There are 2 distinct approaches to implement aggregate. These two methods are explained as follows:

  1. By building aggregate in the database, containing the dimension fields but the not foreign keys along with the aggregated measures. This is represented as standalone tables in the Universe design. This means that they are not joined with any dimensions and the aggregate aware function is used to define the dimensions and the measures of these tables as well.

  2. By not building aggregate tables in the database. Instead they consist of the general fact table at different levels of granularities. The aggregate aware function is used to define only the measures and the aggregate incompatibility is set accordingly in the Universe design.

Question 3: Explain the term 'index awareness'.

Answer: The property of the Universe design, with the help of which values in the conditional queries or values in the data providers which are built from the Universe design are substituted according to their corresponding surrogate keys or indexes, is termed as index awareness.

Question 4: How many modes are there in Business Objects and Designer? Name and explain them.

Answer: Enterprise and Workgroup are the two distinct modes present in Business Objects and designer.

When you are working in a particular environment with a repository, then it refers to enterprise mode. Whereas, when you are working in an environment without a repository, then it refers to workgroup mode. The by-default mode is the mode you are currently working in. However, in order to determine whether other designers are able to access your database or not, you need to save your environment/Universe in either of these modes. Designer allows you to save the Universes in either the enterprise mode or in the workgroup mode.

Question 5: What is a database connection?

Answer: A set of parameters that allows you to access a relational database (RDBMS) is known as a database connection. This set consists of parameters indicating system information such as the user identification, data account as well as path to the database. Secured, shared and personal are the three types of connections provided by the designer.

Question 6: Explain the 'outer join' type of join available in Universe design.

Answer: Outer join is one of the types of joins provided by the Universe design. This type of join is used for linking two tables. One of the tables consists of rows that do not match the common column of the other table. Outer join is further classified into left outer, right outer join, and full outer join.

  • In left outer join, entries from the first table match with the rows from the second.
  • In right outer join, entries from the second table match with the rows from the left.
  • In full outer join, whether the rows match or not, all the rows in all joined tables are included.

Question 7: What is the difference between a derived table and a view? Which one is better?

Answer: A view is created in the database level, whereas a derived table is created only in the Universe level. Views are generally preferred over derived tables because in this case, the bonus of calculation is not loaded on the Business Objects server and remains in the database. However, derived table is the only solution in such situations where the developers do not have access to the database.

Question 8: Name and explain the different types of objects available in the Universe class of Business Objects.

Answer: There are three different types of objects available in the Universe class of Business Objects namely dimension, detail, and measure object.

  • Object which is not the focus for analysis but, provides the description of a dimension object is known as a detail object. For instance, telephone number and customer address.
  • Object that provides those parameters which are the prime focus of analysis is known as dimension object. For instance,
  • name of the city, name of the state, name of the country and the name of the customer.
  • Object that provides only the numerical data or quantities is known as measure objects. For instance, income, revenue, and sales.

Question 9: Name and explain the types of connections used for connecting to the database.

Answer: Personal, secured, and Shared are the three types of connections used for connecting to the database. These types are explained as follows:

  • The connection which is specific to a single user and which can be used only from that computer on which it was created is said to be a personal connection.
  • The connection which allows access to all the common resources such as documents, files or Universes is known as shared connection. Thus, it can be used by several users.
  • The connection which is used for centralizing and controlling the access to critical, confidential or sensitive data is called secured connection. Thus, it allows the safest access to data.

Question 10: Explain the term 'Linked Universes'?

Answer: Whenever we link the data provided by two different data providers then the resultant Universe is termed as a linked Universe.

These are a few questions on Business Objects reporting tool. However, no one knows what the interviewer might come up with as a surprise in the interview. Therefore, prepare well by researching for the finest Business Objects interview questions if you really want the result in your favor.
