Verbal Section : Reading Comprehension
Read the following passage and answer the questions based on the data given in the passage.
An operating system is the most important software which you need to run a computer. It is the thing which is responsible for taking care of almost everything on a computer system. Though the majority of computers that we come across happen to be using only one ‘type’ of operating system performing the same set of functions, operating systems can be branched into several different types as well. Let us have a brief look at the various types of operating system and their features as follows.
The first type of operating system that we are going to study here is the “Batch Processing Operating System”.
In this type of operating system, there is a limit on the level of interaction between the user and processor. Also in some cases there is zero interaction between the user and the processor during the execution of a certain process. The operating system is named so because the data and programs that are to be processed are collected and bundled in the form of a ‘batch’ and then they are executed altogether.
This type of operating system is suitable under when there are large amounts of data to be processed or executed.
It is also suitable when similar data needs to be processed and also when
same type of processing is involved for execution of the bundled data.
The system is capable of identifying times when the processor is idle at which time ‘batches’ maybe processed. Processing is all performed automatically without any user intervention.
Real-time Operating System
is the next type of operating system developed by man. In this type of operating system the processes inputs simultaneously with comparatively fast enough to affect the next input or process. These operating systems are generally used to control complex systems similar to those that require a lot of processing like the machinery and industrial systems.
Another type of operating system is the “Single User Operating System”. As the name suggests, single user OS is designed for one user who can make effective use of it at one particular time.
Multi-Tasking Operating System
is another type of OS which adds to the list. As the name suggest, several applications can be loaded simultaneously in the memory and used. Though the processor handles only one application at one single point of time, it is also capable of switching between the applications effectively in order to execute each application simultaneously. This type of operating system is seen commonly today and is the most common type of OS. Windows operating system is a very good example of this type of OS.
Next type of OS is the “Multi-User Operating System”.
This OS is named so because it allows multiple users to simultaneously use the system. But the processor splits its resources and handles one user at a time while allowing the users to use the system. All this process is carried out at very good speed and efficiency such that it gives the users the feeling of using the system simultaneously. This kind of operating system is utilized by some systems.
The last type of OS developed so far is the “Distributed Operating System”.
As the name suggests, all the software and data resources are distributed around the system. Also the programs and files may be stored on different storage devices which are located in different geographical locations and can be accessed from different computer terminals.
Multi-tasking and multi-user operating systems are the most commonly seen OS used by man in day to day life. Whereas the other operating systems are usually used in companies and firms to power special systems.
