Read the following passage and answer the questions based on the data given in the passage.

Glass is such a thing which has no definite freezing and boiling points. The other name for glass is super cooled liquid. It is brittle in nature which means that it can be broken very easily. We can mold it into any shape that we desire. There are three ingredients used for manufacturing glass namely sand i.e. silica, limestone and soda ash. Depending on the varying quantities of these raw materials, there are in all nine types of glass. Let us have a look at these types of glasses in brief as follows.

The first type of glass is “Soda glass” which is also known by the name “soda-lime glass”. This forms the most common variety of glass. This type of glass can be prepared by heating sodium carbonate and silica. The soda lime glass is used for making windowpanes, tableware, bottles as well as electric bulbs.

The next type of glass is colored glass. It is prepared by mixing small amounts of metallic oxides with hot molten mixture of sand, sodium carbonate and limestone. As the name suggests, you can give any color to this type of glass by choosing the metallic oxide to be added, since different metallic oxides have the ability to give different colors to glass.

Colored glass is in very high demand of all types of glasses. It is used for decorating walls, for making light signals for automobiles, trains and airplanes. It is also used for making sunglasses as well.

Plate glass is another type of glass which is thicker as compared to the ordinary type of glass. This type of glass

is made by floating a layer of molten glass over a layer of molten tin. It is used in the form of shop windows and doors because it has a very smooth surface.

The fourth type of glass is the “safety glass”.

Other name for this type of glass is shatterproof glass because it has the property to remain in place and not shatter after it breaks. This glass is manufactured by by placing a sheet of plastic such as celluloid between sheets of glass. Hence, when such a glass breaks, the pieces stick to the plastic and do not fly to places. Because of its shatter proof nature, this glass is used for making the wind screens of heavy vehicles and automobiles such as cars, buses, trucks and many more. It is also found to be used for making bullet proof screens.

The fifth type of glass is the “laminated glass”. Other name for this glass is bullet-proof glass. In order to make this glass, several layers of safety glass are bound together with a transparent adhesive. The increasing number of layers increase the strength of the glass making it more stronger than the safety type of glass. Hence, it is used for making windshields of airplanes as well as cars.

Next type of glass is the “optical glass”. The other name for this glass is flint glass. It is softer than any other type of glass and is very clear and transparent. It is made by using the ingredients potassium and silicates of lead. It is mainly used for manufacturing lenses as well as other optical instruments such as prisms and many more.

The other types of glasses include “pyrex”, “photo-chromatic” and the “lead crystal” glass.
