Verbal Section : Reading Comprehension

Read the comprehension and answer the following question:

A study recently published in the journal Science found that salinity levels in oceans has changed dramatically around the world in the period of 1950-2000. The study was conducted by Australian and US scientists who looked at ocean data available for this period of time and it has revealed a 'fingerprint' which indicates the salinity change has caused climate changes which has accelerated the rainfall cycle.

The study has lead to a very clear fingerprint which reveals that the earth's water cycle has accelerated that has led to the acceleration in the evaporation and rainfall cycle.

The co-author of the report, Wijffels has said that the salinity field has changed so much in the last fifty years that our hydrological cycle has intensified a lot. The dynamics which were happening in the ocean were also happening over the land, according to the researchers involved in this study.

The conclusion actually indicates that atmosphere has now become a lot faster in transporting water from places which are drier to places which can get lots of rain. This just reflects the fact that we see today, wet areas are getting a lot wetter and dry areas becoming a lot drier.

The study was reportedly much difficult, according to Wijffels as there was little quality data available related to the amount of rainfall and the data was mostly collected mainly on land making it much more difficult. So, getting the whole picture of the effect the salinity had on rainfalls was frustrating for the researchers. This pointer is crucial as most of our earth is covered by ocean and most of the evaporation also takes place over the ocean. Changes in ocean play a crucial role in climate change study and it is necessary to have quality data regarding the ocean.

The research was conducted by a group of researchers from the Australian government's science and research body, CSIRO and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. They had used data taken from vessels in oceans around the world and related them to climate models to produce their report. The observed pattern indicated repeated changes in the ocean that are believed to be the result of climate changes around the world.

The changes are said to be repeated in every ocean including the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North and South Pacific and Indian. The basic sense got after observing the pattern is that the areas of lower salinity have become fresher and the areas that were salty have become more salty.
